Restoring Anaheim’s Murals
Higgy Vasquez received the same public recognition award as his famous father, muralist and fine art painter Emigdio Vasquez, twenty five years later, for Art in Public Places in the City of Anaheim by the Anaheim Art Council. Vasquez re-created three vintage mural squares 6′ by 5.5,’ at Citrus Park.
On location for three months in 2017, the murals were painted starting at 6:00 a.m. to deal with the summer heat, and to seek out a quiet time to paint at the park. Early mornings, visitors to the murals included walkers, joggers and parents with young children. Sometimes neighbors living across from the park would come to express their gratitude that the art was being restored. They had pride in their local park and were very happy to see these colorful images return.
One of the most beautiful images at the park is Blue Vase, a community favorite. The art was originally designed as packing crate labels for oranges that were packaged and transported from the historic Sunkist Packing Plant located on Anaheim Blvd, now a trendy hot spot for good food and crafts.
